Emerald City?

Well, I guess a acclomeration of villages could be called a city, however, the term cityimplies noise, and pollution, and the villages of Keralas backwaters seem to be rather free of both those things. Still, while we were peacefully rowed through the small canals and over the large lake we could not stop thinking that the landscape looks rather like an emrald stone should appear from within. Everything around us was in different shades of green, starting with a light green of the rice fields and going to the lush darkgreen of the palmtees. In between there were shades of turquoise (the water), blue (he sky and the water) and mintish greeen (several waterplants that were growing abundantly along the shore). Now and then the green was interruppted by specks of red, and purple, and yellow as we passed by yet another hibiscus bush or another lotus bud.
Apart from that, everything sparkled and glittered so much that after a while you had to turn your head and stare at the brown planks of the boat just to relax your eyes.
Now and then the soft waves of the water where dissheveled as a fish came up for some food, a water snake swam its way, or a kingfisher dived for its lunch. Women wearing sarees along the shoreline were also fishing or getting their catch ready to be served in a tradishional fish-curry. Chlothes, dishes and children were equally washed in the canals and the aereas men gathered in the toddyshops to celebrate half a days successful work. A flock of ducks was hurrying out of the water as a ferry drove by. The people aboard transported their weeks requirements in big boxes and bags from the city to the small islands, where they live. The waterways still provide their only means of transport. And so we saw old and young paddling along, on their way to school, to work, or just to meet the women on the next island for a little chat...maybe about all these tourists that come and take a peek into their privacy without asking.

bangles clarification

hallo zusammen,

Hi everybody, and thanx for playing.
I just wanted to clarify that the picture that I posted with the Question of the Day is not the picture of an Indian bride. When we met her on the ferry to Kottayam, she was in her last week of her honeymoon.

Bilderlauf XII

Many ppl ask us if they can take a pic with them, they of us, or even we of them. Some don't ask at all and just do it. Some examples.

Bilderlauf XII

This time in our photosection: The days in Kanyakumari, where we stayed in an Ashram and peacocks vowed for our attention, an island wanted to be explored (along with many Indian pilgrims/tourists. We actually went there for the sunrise and -set that is supposedly so beauty and bountiful (can I say that?), which you can see on the picture where a post-grad giant is talking to college dwarfs. The last pics are from Varkala, and that elephant worked while we had breakfast in the cafe next to his workingplace.

All from our great TempleTour through Tamilnadu, above the Roqueforte, aeh, Rock Fort in Trichy, and K. climbing its stepps, then the 10 acres temple in Tiruvanamalai, which is not colorful at all, against all reasoning, and a pic of what happens when you give money to a temple elephant. Then, a HOLY COW! and a voluptuous temple statue at Manna Cafe, and last but not least K. while still being able to eat (in Pondicherry) and with heavy luggage waiting for the train to Kanyakumari.

Noch ein paar Bilder

Beach times

After we left Kanyakumari, the tip of India, where two oceans and the Bay of Bengal are joined together, we decided it was once more time for the beach! So we cut Keralas capital city, Tirvandrum, out of our ittinery and headed for beautiful Varkala right away. We did not regret it. Whereas the weather on the road was rather bad (heavy rains followed us since Trichy in Tamil Nadu) Varkala welcomed us with a clear sky and a romantic beach. We made good use of both and spend two wonderful days playing in the waves and walking along the cliffs. At night we dined either with two lovly Austrailian girls or two Mubaikiins, with whom we had rather interesting conversations about the current situation in Mumbai, Indian politics and India in general. When we prepared to leave for Alleppey, the ocean bid us good bye by showing us a school of playing dolphins. There were just there, right in front of us, somersaulting their way northwards. I guess you can imagine how reluctant we got into the taxi that dropped us at the next busstop. However, thats just the thing about travelling...you leave something good behind just to find something just as good or even better...or wait... maybe that is just what it is with life???

Short Update in English

We are fine! When the shootings started we were as far away from Bombay as we could possibly be without leaving the subcontinent.
Right now we are traveling in Kerala again. The last few days, we spend in Varkala were we enjoyed a great beach. After that we came up to Alleppey, a cozy city which is surroundet by lakes rivers and canals...we will stay here until tomorrow. Then its up to Munnar in the western Ghats. By then I hope I can post a longer entry, because writing on this keyboard is kind of no fun...
